Effective prospecting starts before the salesperson chooses telephone, email or LinkedIn.

What is B2B lead generation training?

B2B lead generation training teaches salespeople how to create qualified sales conversations with prospective business customers. It should cover prospect selection, research, relevant messaging, telephone, email and LinkedIn outreach, early resistance, qualification and agreeing a useful next step rather than simply increasing prospecting activity.

Key takeaways
  1. More prospecting activity does not fix weak targeting or irrelevant outreach.
  2. Telephone, email and LinkedIn are channels, not separate prospecting strategies.
  3. Salespeople need a credible reason to engage before they choose the message or channel.
  4. Early outreach should earn a useful conversation rather than force a premature pitch.
  5. AI can support research and preparation, but relevance still requires commercial judgement.

What problem should B2B lead generation training solve?

When pipeline is weak, the first response is often to increase activity. More calls, more emails and more LinkedIn messages can increase volume, but volume does not correct poor targeting, generic messaging or a weak reason for contacting the buyer.

More prospecting activity does not fix poor prospecting. Salespeople need to know who they should contact, why that person might care and what gives them a credible reason to start a conversation.

Klozers therefore starts with the team’s market, customers, value proposition and existing good practice. The course develops the skills needed to create relevant conversations within that context rather than importing a fixed prospecting script.

Who is B2B lead generation training for?

This is private team training for organisations that need salespeople to create more qualified new-business conversations.

SDRs and BDRs

Teams responsible for creating qualified conversations and meetings for the wider sales organisation.

Business development teams

Salespeople who own both prospecting and the early stages of new-business development.

Account executives

Commercial teams expected to self-generate part of their pipeline rather than depend entirely on marketing.

Sales leaders and L&D

Leaders who need a consistent, practical approach to prospecting across a team.

What the B2B lead generation course covers

The final programme is built around your market, sales motion and existing internal practice. Typical modules include the following.

01

Module 1: Define the right prospects

Build a clear view of the accounts and roles that fit the commercial priority. Participants learn how to avoid treating every available contact as an equally valuable prospect.

02

Module 2: Build a reason to engage

Use company, market and buyer context to create a credible reason for contact. The emphasis is on relevance to the organisation or buying group rather than superficial personalisation.

03

Module 3: Prepare multi-channel outreach

Decide how telephone, email and LinkedIn support the same prospecting objective. Participants learn to select channels deliberately rather than run three disconnected streams of activity.

04

Module 4: Start sales conversations

Practise call openings, emails and LinkedIn messages that establish relevance without immediately moving into a product pitch.

05

Module 5: Handle early resistance

Work with the resistance that appears before a prospect has agreed to a full sales conversation, including lack of time, existing suppliers, no current priority and requests to send information.

06

Module 6: Qualify and agree the next step

Establish whether there is a credible reason to continue, capture what has been learned and agree a next action that reflects the prospect’s situation rather than forcing every contact into a meeting.

Build prospecting around your market, not a generic script

How Klozers certification works

Where certification is included, participants are assessed on evidence that the agreed prospecting behaviours have been applied in live work, not simply on attendance.

Candidate

Awarded after the programme · expires Day 90

Confirms completion of the agreed training and the initial application plan.

Certified

Awarded Day 90 · valid 12 months

Confirms that agreed requirements have been evidenced in live work and assessed through the defined process.

What gets certified is your standard, not ours

The evidence requirements are written against the prospecting behaviours selected during scoping. They can include preparation, targeting, message relevance, call execution, qualification and next-step discipline.

Certification provides a defined period for applying and evidencing the agreed behaviours after training.

What does current B2B buyer research tell us?

Outreach relevance

Gartner survey of 632 B2B buyers

Irrelevant outreach can damage the chance of future engagement.

73%

of surveyed buyers said they actively avoid suppliers that send irrelevant outreach.

Digital buying

Gartner survey of 645 B2B buyers

Prospects increasingly research independently before and during supplier engagement.

7

information sources were used on average during a recent B2B purchase.

Human contribution

Gartner 2026 buyer research

Digital research has not removed the value of a relevant salesperson.

+39 pts

Buyers were 39 percentage points more likely to say a sales rep understood their needs than GenAI.

These Gartner studies concern B2B buyer behaviour and buying experiences. They do not test this Klozers course and should not be read as evidence of a training outcome.

Telephone, email and LinkedIn should support the same commercial reason to engage rather than operate as independent prospecting strategies.

Frequently asked questions

What is sales management training?

It develops the skills salespeople need to identify appropriate prospects, create a relevant reason to engage, use suitable channels, start conversations, handle early resistance, qualify interest and agree the next step.

Yes, where telephone prospecting is relevant to your sales motion. Cold calling is treated as one channel within a wider prospecting approach rather than as the whole lead generation strategy.

Yes, where those channels are relevant. The focus is on how telephone, email and LinkedIn support the same prospecting objective rather than teaching disconnected channel tactics.

Yes. AI can support account research, preparation, drafting and signal monitoring. Salespeople still need to judge whether the information is accurate, whether the message is commercially relevant and whether human contact is appropriate.

No. The refreshed proposition is private organisational training built around the client’s market, buyers and sales environment.

Why should B2B prospecting start with the target rather than the channel?

Telephone, email and LinkedIn are tools. They do not decide which market deserves attention, which accounts fit the sales strategy or why a buyer should spend time with the salesperson. Starting with a channel can therefore produce efficient activity aimed at the wrong people.

The first decision is commercial. Which customers are the organisation trying to win, and why? A useful target profile should be grounded in the customers the business can serve well, the problems it can credibly solve, the routes it can reach and the commercial priorities already agreed. That may produce a broad ideal customer profile for one sales motion and a named-account list for another.

The second decision is who inside those organisations matters. B2B purchases often involve several people with different responsibilities. Prospecting should therefore avoid assuming that one job title is always the buyer. The appropriate contact depends on the issue, where the decision is made and who can recognise the value of changing the current situation.

Only then does channel choice become useful. A telephone call may be the quickest way to test relevance with one prospect. Another may be easier to reach through email. LinkedIn can support research, context and engagement. The point is not to declare one channel superior. It is to select the combination that gives the salesperson the best opportunity to earn a useful conversation.

What makes B2B outreach relevant?

Relevance is more demanding than inserting a prospect’s name, company or recent post into a template. The salesperson needs a credible connection between something that matters in the prospect’s world and a problem, opportunity or decision the seller can legitimately help with.

That context may come from the market, company or buying group. Changes in regulation, expansion, recruitment, product launches, new leadership, investment, operational pressures or strategic priorities can all be useful when they genuinely connect to the seller’s proposition. They are not useful merely because they provide a personalised opening sentence.

Gartner surveyed 632 B2B buyers in August and September 2024 and reported that 73% actively avoid suppliers that send irrelevant outreach. The implication for prospecting training is not that every message should become longer or more personalised. It is that salespeople need to make better decisions about who to contact and what value the contact could have for that buyer.

There is also a risk in personalising too narrowly. Gartner’s 2025 buying-group research found that content focused on buying-group relevance had a positive effect on consensus, while individual-level relevance could increase conflict. That research concerns B2B buying groups rather than prospecting training, but it supports an important distinction: relevance should connect to the organisation’s shared commercial problem, not simply to the personal interests of one contact.

How should telephone, email and LinkedIn work together?

A multi-channel approach does not mean sending the same pitch three times. Each channel has different strengths. Telephone enables immediate interaction and lets the salesperson hear how the prospect responds. Email gives the prospect written context that can be reviewed or shared. LinkedIn can support research, professional context and engagement around relevant subjects.

The channels should share one underlying commercial hypothesis. If the salesperson believes a particular issue could matter to the target account, the call, email and LinkedIn activity should all be consistent with that reason for engagement. The wording can change because the channel changes, but the commercial logic should not.

This matters for measurement as well. Counting calls, emails and connection requests separately can encourage activity without showing whether the sequence is creating qualified conversations. A team should still inspect channel-level activity where useful, but the more important lead indicator is whether the activity is producing the type of sales conversation the strategy requires.

Gartner’s research on B2B buying describes a market in which buyers move between digital information and human interaction rather than following a simple linear path. Its 2026 survey of 645 B2B buyers found that buyers used an average of seven information sources during a recent purchase. That research concerns buying rather than outbound prospecting, but it reinforces why a salesperson should expect the prospect to use multiple sources and channels around any direct interaction.

What should the first prospecting conversation achieve?

The purpose of an initial contact is not automatically to complete discovery, deliver the full value proposition or secure a demonstration. The salesperson first needs to establish whether there is enough relevance and interest for the conversation to continue.

That changes how an opening is designed. An effective opening gives the prospect enough context to understand why the salesperson is calling or writing, without asking the prospect to absorb a long description of the seller’s company. The salesperson then needs to listen to the response and decide whether to explore, clarify, handle resistance or stop.

Qualification at this stage should be proportionate. A prospect can have a recognisable problem and still be the wrong opportunity. Equally, demanding detailed qualification information before the prospect has received any value can make the interaction one-sided. Training should help salespeople judge what they genuinely need to know before agreeing the next step.

The next step should also reflect what has been learned. Sometimes that is a discovery meeting. It may instead be an introduction to another stakeholder, a short exchange of information or an agreement to reconnect when a known event occurs. Treating every response as a route to the same meeting can inflate activity measures while reducing the quality of pipeline created.

How should sales teams use AI in B2B lead generation?

AI can reduce the time required for research, summarise public information, help organise account signals and provide a starting point for messages. Used well, that gives salespeople more time for judgement and live buyer interaction. Used badly, it makes it easier to produce irrelevant outreach at greater volume.

The distinction is important because buyers are also using AI. Gartner’s 2026 survey found that 45% of B2B buyers used generative AI during a recent purchase, primarily to gather vendor and product information, while 69% preferred to validate AI-generated insights with sales representatives. This suggests that salespeople increasingly operate alongside digital and AI research rather than replacing it.

Gartner also reported that buyers were 39 percentage points more likely to say a sales representative understood their needs than to say the same of GenAI. The same research found advantages for human sellers in advancing the buyer to the next step, building decision confidence and helping quantify benefits. These findings concern the buying experience, not lead generation training outcomes, but they provide a useful reason to train judgement and conversation skills alongside AI-supported preparation.

For prospecting teams, a practical rule is that AI can assist with preparation but should not be allowed to invent relevance. Claims about a prospect’s priorities, problems or intentions still need evidence. A salesperson should be able to explain why the account was selected, why the message matters and what information supports the approach before increasing the volume of outreach.

How should B2B lead generation performance be measured?

Revenue is important, but it is a late measure of prospecting capability. Teams need earlier indicators that show whether the process is creating credible opportunities before the revenue outcome is known.

Useful measures can include the number of target accounts worked, conversations created, prospects progressing to an agreed next step and qualified opportunities accepted into pipeline. Channel measures such as calls made, emails sent, reply rates and connection rates can help diagnose execution, but they should not become the objective by themselves.

Quality matters because a meeting that should never have been booked consumes time later in the sales process. If lead generation training increases activity while qualification falls, the team may simply move the cost of poor prospecting downstream. Managers therefore need to inspect both the quantity and credibility of the conversations being created.

The exact measures should follow the organisation’s sales process and existing systems. Klozers favours leading indicators that can trigger corrective action while there is still time to change the result. The purpose of measurement is to improve execution, not create additional reporting work for the sales team.

Prospecting works better when relevance comes before volume.
